Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between financial and healthcare power of attorney?

A financial power of attorney lets your chosen agent manage money, property, and financial decisions. A healthcare power of attorney lets your chosen agent make medical decisions on your behalf if you're unable to. Most clients put both in place together.

Who should I name as my agent?

Someone you trust completely — a spouse, adult child, sibling, or close friend. We'll talk through the decision with you, including backup choices in case your first choice isn't available.

Does this go into effect immediately?

You control that. Documents can be written to take effect right away, or only once a doctor confirms you're unable to make decisions yourself (called a 'springing' power of attorney). We'll help you choose what fits your comfort level.

What happens if I don't have these documents and become incapacitated?

Your family may need to go to court to be appointed as your guardian — a process that takes time, costs money, and is a matter of public record, at a moment when your family can least afford the added stress.
